The photography of Phil Nicholls is a remarkable archive of bold and evocative images capturing some of the most influential figures in music history. Born in Cornwall and trained at Falmouth School of Art and the Bath Academy of Art, Phil’s passion for music and the rock imagery of cult photographers like Anton Corbijn led him to specialise in photography early in his career. In 1985, shortly after leaving art school, he won the Zigzag/Pentax Photographer of the Year Rock Portrait Award, which propelled him into the world of professional music photography and brought him to London as a freelance photographer. Phil went on to join the iconic weekly music paper Melody Maker, where over the next 12 years he became known for his gritty, intelligent portraits of rock stars and music legends, establishing himself as a leading figure in the field. Nicholls has captured iconic moments and personalities across multiple decades, photographing artists and bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Prodigy, Amy Winehouse, Björk and Courtney Love. His work has appeared in major publications including Uncut, The Guardian, The Telegraph, NME and countless others, and has been exhibited internationally in cities like London, Brussels and Tokyo. Phil’s studio and on-location shoots - from backstage with Amy Winehouse to press campaigns with The Prodigy - demonstrate his ability to capture both the raw energy of live music and the intimate character of artists in quieter moments.
